Create/Modify Components
Create/Modify Components is a first step towards creating crosstabs and running reports and lets you build Components from one or more variables. Components are then used for building the tables, charts, and banners of Crosstabs.
Choose a dataset
Choose the dataset from the dropdown list for use with selecting Variables for building Components.
Components
- Components are used for building the rows and columns of Crosstabs.
- Components can be added as a single variable, summary of means, summary of frequencies, multiple response, as a group, or as net logic type when more than one variable is selected.
- Click anywhere on a component in the Components list to highlight a single component to display Component Information and Component Logic information.
- Enabling the Components list check box allows you to delete, link or unlink selected components. You can select the check box for multiple components to use the Delete, Link and Unlink options.
- Components are added to the list in the order of creation. You can use the Sort by name check box to sort components in Name order.
Variables
- The Variables list displays the variables in your dataset.
-
By default only Numeric variables are listed
- Choose All to display all of the variables in your dataset, Numeric to display only variables of numeric format or String to display only variables of string format.
- Show hidden variables will display all variables including those marked as hidden.
- When displayed, hidden variables are shown as italicized in the Variables list.
- Search for... allows you to find a specific variable
Add
Select one or more variables from the Variables list and choose Add to create a Component comprised of one variable.
Summary of Means
- Select one or more variables from the Variables list and choose Summary of Means to create a summary of means Component.
- Select the code value(s) to be included in the summary of means.
- Note: If the values are not the same across variables you will need to enter the range to be included.
- Create component with inverted mean values allows you to invert the mean value used for each value.
- The summary of means Component is created with one mean row for each variable selected.
- When more than one variable is selected for a summary of means, the Label from the first variable in the list of selected variables is used as the Label for the Component.
Summary of Frequencies
- Select one or more variables from the Variables list and choose Summary of Frequencies to create a summary of frequencies Component.
- Select the code value(s) to be included in the summary of frequencies.
- Note: If the values are not the same across variables you will need to enter the range to be included.
- Enter a range for the percentage base (optional).
- The use value label as row text feature will allow you to use the value label when a single value is selected.
- The summary of frequencies Component is created with one row for each variable selected.
- When more than one variable is selected for a summary of frequencies, the Label from the first variable in the list of selected variables is used as the Label for the Component.
- Summary of Frequencies is a good choice to create a top or bottom box table from multiple variables where you are selecting only a couple of code values for each row but want the percentage base as the full set of code values (for example, a top two box rating table where code values "1" and "2" are used for the top box ratings but you want the percentage base as all of the rating code values "1-5").
Multiple Response
- Select one or more variables from the Variables list and choose Multiple Response to create a multiple response Component.
- Select the code value to be included in the multiple response.
- Use value label as row text is chosen by default, when unchecked the variable label will be used instead.
- The multiple response Component is created with one row for each variable selected.
- When more than one variable is selected for a multiple response, the Label from the first variable in the list of selected variables is used as the Label for the Component.
- Multiple Response is a good choice to create a table from multiple variables where a specific code value (usually code value "1") represents the answer "Yes".
More
Add as Group
- Select one or more variables from the Variables list and choose Add Group to create a Component comprised of more than one variable.
- When more than one variable is selected for a group, the Label from the first variable in the list of selected variables is used as the Label for the Component.
Net Logic
- Select one or more variables from the Variables list and choose Net Logic to create a Component that scans across multiple variables.
- The selected variables create a component that consists of row's OR's together each code value across all selected variables
- I.e. Q1_1=1 OR Q1_2=1 OR Q1_3=1
Duplicate
- Components can be duplicated. This is most useful if you have modified an existing component and need another copy of the component as a base for making changes.
- Enable the check box for the desired components and choose Duplicate.
- The duplicate components will be added to the end of the Components list unless the Sort by name option is enabled. If the Sort by name option is enabled, the duplicate components will be added to the list in their appropriate position based on the duplicate component name.
Delete
To delete one or more components, enable the list check box for the desired components and choose Delete.
Link
- Components can be linked to other datasets. This is most useful if you have a recurring study (for example, the same study done every quarter) and you want to reuse the components that you have already created.
- Enable the check box for the desired components and choose Link.
- Enable the check box for each Dataset you want to link the selected components to.
- If only one Component was selected and it is already linked to a dataset, that dataset will not appear in the list.
- You can only Link components to datasets that you own.
Unlink
- Components can be unlinked from other datasets.
- Enable the check box for the desired components and choose Unlink.
- Enable the check box for each Dataset you want to unlink the selected components from.
- You can only Unlink components from datasets that you own.
Component Information
- When you click on the Name or Label of a component, that component becomes highlighted and information about the component is displayed.
- Component Information includes the name, label, description, last modified date and time, calculation type and the datasets that are linked to this component.
- You can edit the Name, Label or Description of a component by selecting Edit Info.
- The Banner Preview drop down button allows you to preview the selected component if you apply the component as the banner.
- Note: This preview only shows the highlighted component within the component window
Edit
Enter the desired Name, Label and/or Description and choose Save.
