Editing variable data

WinCross provides a convenient data grid for editing variable (*.csv, *.tab, *.tsv, *.xls, *.xlsx, *.xlsm or *.sav) data files. The data grid opens automatically when an variable data file is opened.

The data grid has two views of the data, the Data tab view of the actual data and the Variables tab view of the data structure. Initially, the data file is opened to the Data tab.

• You can use the Word wrap option to wrap long data strings for easier viewing on both the Data tab and the Variables tab.
• The Spell check option turns on spell checking for variables that are String type only on the Data tab. The Spell check option turns on spell checking for Label and Values only on the Variables tab. This option will remain selected for each WinCross session until it is deselected. A red squiggly line indicates a potentially misspelled word in the cell. You must double-click in the cell where the potentially misspelled word will be underlined with a red squiggly line. You can right-click on the word in the cell or at the top of the data grid to see options for correcting the misspelled word. To correct a misspelled Value Label, you must enter the Edit Code Values and Value Labels dialog and correct the misspelling there.

Data tab

The Data tab displays the actual data values and lets you:

• Change data values
• Cut, copy, paste and delete data values
• Undo/Redo or Discard all changes
• Round Selection to 'n' Places
• Generate Random Values
• Fill Missing Values with Means
• Split Data into New Variables
• Merge Data into a New Variable
• Spell Check Data
• Add, insert and delete records
• Create an "Express" frequency and/or statistical report for selected variables
• Sort records by variable values
• Add, insert and delete variables

Variables tab

The Variables tab displays the data file structure, including the Variable Name, Label, Code Values and Value Labels, Type (String or Number), Field Width, Field Decimals, Field Format (Alphanumeric, Numeric, Currency, Date, etc.), Export Width, Export Decimals, Export Format (Alphanumeric, Numeric, Currency, Date, etc.) and View Width.

The Variables tab lets you:

• Cut, copy, paste and delete variable attribute values
• Undo/Redo or Discard all changes
• Find Next Spelling Error
• Sort variables by variable name
• Create an "Express" frequency and/or statistical report for selected variables
• Add, insert and delete variables
